It also strikes us funny that people just recite the 2nd Amendment as it is written however many do not understand its true meaning and often guess instead of digging up facts of the time.
In the federalist papers James Madison wrote:
“being armed” is an “advantage” that “the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation.”
“Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe,”
Madison wrote, “which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms. And it is not certain, that with this aid alone they would not be able to shake off their yokes."
Furthermore in his writings you can see the full intention:
"That a well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defence of a free state; that standing armies in time of peace, should be avoided as dangerous to liberty; and that in all cases, the military should be under strict subordination to, and governed by the civil power."
Hence the 2 Amendment was not written for hunting nor was it just written for muskets… it was written for the people to defend itself from a Tyrannical Government.
